Day Trip from Port Macquarie — Mid North Coast NSW

Port Macquarie Day Trip Horse Experience NSW

A 90-minute drive south and you step into a different world — gentle giants, working harness, and over 30 years of Clydesdale horsemanship on a genuine NSW farm.

The Horse Experience Port Macquarie Doesn’t Have

Drive 90 minutes south on the Pacific Highway and arrive somewhere genuinely memorable — Bulahdelah Clydesdales, where heavy draught horses still do real work and real people care for them every day.

This isn’t a show. It’s a working farm, and the session puts you right beside horses that have been bred, trained and handled here for decades. You’ll meet Dusty May, Hercules, Jax and Murphy, watch a live working demonstration, and get hands-on with full heavy horse harness — leather collar, hames and traces, the real equipment used every day.

Groups of up to 50 are welcome. Sessions run 10am sharp, last two hours, and the property is set up for everyone — undercover seating, wheelchair access, walker frames and a portable toilet on site.

Stop in Bulahdelah Town

Bulahdelah is a well-known rest stop on the Pacific Highway — it’s not just a pass-through. Build it into your group’s itinerary.

The Tourist Information Centre right in town has free parking, clean bathrooms and friendly local staff. Grab a coffee before or after your session.

Two minutes down the main street is the Bulahdelah Bakery — a genuine country bakery with a loyal following. Their pies and pastries are a proper Mid North Coast tradition. Many of our visiting groups factor in a bakery stop as part of the day.

After the session you can head back through town, browse the shops, or continue south to the Myall Lakes — one of the great coastal national parks on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Your Two-Hour Session

Every session follows a set format so your group gets the full experience from start to finish. Nothing is rushed — there’s time to ask questions, photograph, and simply stand beside animals that most people never get this close to.

01

Arrival & Meet the Horses

Your host introduces the team: Dusty May, Hercules, Jax and Murphy. Learn about their individual histories, how they were bred, and what makes Clydesdales the breed they are.

02

Live Working Demonstration

Watch the horses work. Not a performance — an actual working demonstration of Clydesdales doing what they were bred for. Loud, powerful and unforgettable up close.

03

Heavy Horse Harness Display

Handle the full working harness: leather collar, hames, traces and all. Your host explains how it fits, how it works, and why every piece was designed the way it was. You’re encouraged to touch, lift and try it on.

04

Meet, Feed & Photograph

Get alongside the horses one on one. Feed them, photograph them, and take as much time as your group wants. This is the part most people remember longest.

Years of Clydesdale experience on this property

A Genuine Working Farm

This isn’t a tourist attraction built to look like a farm. Bulahdelah Clydesdales has been working with heavy draught horses for over 30 years. The horses are handled daily, the harness is used regularly, and the knowledge passed on during every session comes from decades of real experience — not a script.

When your group visits, you’re on a property where these animals have lived, worked and been cared for their whole lives. That difference is something every visitor notices.
