Hunter Valley to Bulahdelah
Hunter Valley visitors already know the combination: wide open farmland, a bit of history, good company, and something that can't be replicated back home. Wine and horses have always gone together in regional NSW — and if your group is already up in the Hunter for a weekend, Bulahdelah Clydesdales is only 2 hours north on the Pacific Motorway.
This isn't a vineyard horse ride or a tourist-trap petting zoo. Bulahdelah Clydesdales is a working farm with over 30 years of history handling groups. You'll watch genuine draught horses perform real farm work, handle the harness, and get up close with Dusty May, Hercules, Jax and Murphy — four animals with four very distinct personalities.
Perfect for a day extension on a Hunter Valley weekend away. Perfect for social groups, hens parties, ladies day outs, corporate groups, Probus clubs, bus tours, and family celebrations who want something genuinely memorable to anchor the trip.
Hunter Valley weekends and working farm experiences share the same DNA. Add a Clydesdale session to your itinerary and you've got a day nobody's done before.
The Hunter Valley has plenty of horse experiences. None of them are Clydesdales. At 800kg and 18 hands, these are animals in a completely different league.
Cessnock to Bulahdelah: head north on the Pacific Motorway, take the Bulahdelah exit. Two hours from the heart of wine country. Easy day trip, maximum impact.
Why Hunter Valley Groups Keep Coming Back
A growing number of Hunter Valley tour operators and group organisers are building Bulahdelah Clydesdales into the second day of a weekend itinerary. Day one: wineries, cellar doors, Hunter Valley Gardens. Day two: head north on the Pacific Motorway, stop in Bulahdelah for coffee and breakfast at the Bulahdelah Bakery, then out to the farm for a 10am session.
It works especially well for groups who've come up from Sydney or Newcastle and are already accustomed to time on the road. The 2-hour drive north from Cessnock or Maitland is easy motorway driving — no backroads, no fuss. You're there before mid-morning.
The farm is set up for groups of all ages. Undercover seating for up to 50 people, wheelchair access, walker frames welcome, and a portable toilet on site. Nobody is left out, nobody gets rushed. It's the kind of experience that shows up in the conversation on the drive home — and still gets mentioned years later.
Getting Here from the Hunter Valley
Start from Cessnock, Maitland or Singleton. Head to the Pacific Motorway on-ramp and point north.
Approx 2 hours on the motorway. Smooth drive through the Hunter and Manning regions. Coffee thermos optional.
Take the Bulahdelah exit. Stop at the Tourist Information Centre and grab something from the Bulahdelah Bakery.
Short drive from town. Plenty of parking for cars and coaches. Session starts at 10am sharp.
What Happens on the Day
Settle in under cover and get introduced to the four Clydesdales — Dusty May, Hercules, Jax and Murphy. Every visitor has a different favourite by the end.
Watch the Clydesdales put through their paces in a genuine working demonstration. 800kg of horse in motion is something cameras struggle to capture. You need to be there.
Handle authentic leather collars, hames, traces and chains. Learn how a working heavy horse team was harnessed and understand the craftsmanship behind each piece.
Everyone gets personal time with the horses. Feed by hand, stand alongside them, and take as many photos as you want. Bring carrots. These are not shy animals.
Nobody gets rushed off the property. Ask questions, hear the stories behind the horses, and take your time. Over 30 years of experience means there's always something worth knowing.
